Lizards and snakes love bright colours, but tortoises prefer natural tones to match the colour of their carapace (shell). Made from 100% natural calcium carbonate, the sand has been tested as safe and digestible if inadvertently consumed by a reptile.
The sand also conducts heat well, which helps maintain the temperature and provides a natural microclimate for desert species. The sand is suitable for use with a heat mat. Many desert reptiles love to dig and burrow in the sand and you should provide a depth of sand to suit your particular species of reptile.
Directions: Spread the substrate evenly over the bottom of the terrarium, filling it to a depth of 2.5 – 5 cm. If using a heat mat refer to the manufacturer instructions for the depth required. Moisten the substrate to create extra humidity but avoid waterlogging. Check daily to remove soiled chips. Completely replace substrate every 2 – 3 weeks, or more frequently if heavily soiled or wet.
Safety: All loose substrates can cause an impacted gut if consumed in large quantities. To help prevent excessive ingestion ensure that your reptile has sufficient calcium in its diet.
